Improving nature in the built environment

It has been announced that local communities have been invited to recommend existing nature areas or new areas, where nature areas could be formed, in a bid for a share of £7.5m to make it happen. This would in turn create 12 new Nature Improvement Areas (NIAs) by April 2012, in an effort to re-establish wildlife populations and help species to respond to climate change.

This will involve elements such as reintroducing hedgerows, meadows, ponds and woodlands, whereas in towns and cities residents will be encouraged to create ‘pocket gardens’ by being helped to add trees to their streets.
