The Co-operative Group will today have their new HQ building officially opened by The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh in Manchester.

The building is revolutionary and currently boasts the title of the world’s most energy efficient building with a BREEAM rating of ‘Outstanding’ and a score of over 95%. There are a host of energy efficient features as would be expected from the title such as a combined heat and power plant (CHP), LED low energy lighting, grey water and rainwater recycling along with heat recovery from the IT systems to aid with heating the building itself along with a number of other energy saving design elements.

The building is 30,500m2 and will house more than 3000 Co-operative employees and it is expected that the company will save 40-60% of their current energy costs from the current HQ. This is especially timely as further increases in energy costs are set to rise for the next 17 years according to the National Audit Office yesterday!
