Two Storey Extension

This was deemed as a 'house for life', which means the client is focussed on thinking of how they will use the house over and above the resale value.

The crucial consideration when thinking about extending a house should, in my opinion, be to make sure that we are using the existing floorspace in the best way, not to just add new floor area.

The brief here was to replace a lean-to on the side of the house and create a good sized kitchen and dining area with a new bedroom above.

The client had a keen interest in sustainability, with a solar array already in place on the original house roof.

The high level roof was finished with interlocking tiles to match the existing. The low level roof slopes had a green roof installed, with the client carrying out the planting themselves.

The house already had a good living space, however the kitchen and dining area were out of proportion with the house and didn't reflect the communal cooking area that most people look towards in a modern household.

The original kitchen area was converted into a Study, the all important storage cupboards and a W.C

The extension is light and spacious, with the structural members supporting the new first floor bedroom above having been hidden away to reduce shadows from both natural and any ceiling lights. A small detail perhaps, but to me at least, it can make or break a room.
